Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Slotted spoon
  • Small saucepan (for tea, optional)
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Mixing spoon
  • Tall serving glasses
  • Wide boba straws

Ingredients

  • ½ cup dried tapioca pearls boba
  • 4 cups water for boiling the pearls
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar for sweetening the pearls
  • 2 cups fresh water for brewing tea
  • 2 black tea bags or 2 teaspoons loose-leaf black tea
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2 –3 tablespoons sugar or honey
  • Ice cubes

Instructions

Step 1: Cook The Tapioca Pearls

  • Start by bringing 4 cups of water to a rolling boil in a medium pot. Once boiling, pour in the tapioca pearls and give them a gentle stir so they don’t clump together. Let them cook for about 15–20 minutes, or follow the timing on the package. They should turn soft and chewy. Turn off the heat and let them sit in the hot water for another 5 minutes. Drain them well, then place them in a bowl and mix in some brown sugar while they’re still warm. Set aside.

Step 2: Make The Tea

  • Boil 2 cups of water and steep your black tea (tea bags or loose leaves both work) for 5–7 minutes so the flavor is nice and strong. Remove the tea bags or strain out the leaves. While the tea is still warm, stir in sugar or honey until dissolved. Let it cool down to room temperature before using.

Step 3: Put It Together

  • Spoon the sweetened tapioca pearls into two tall glasses. Add a handful of ice cubes to each glass. Pour the cooled tea over the ice, filling the glass about three quarters full.

Step 4: Add Milk And Enjoy

  • Top each glass with milk. Give it a gentle stir to combine everything. Add a wide straw, and it’s ready to drink. It’s best enjoyed right away while the pearls are perfectly chewy.
