Equipment

  • Small saucepan
  • Whisk or spoon
  • Fine grater (for cocoa stick)
  • Measuring cups & spoons

Ingredients

  • 1 Earl Grey tea bag
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 tablespoons finely grated cocoa stick or unsweetened cocoa block
  • 1 small cinnamon stick
  • 1 –2 whole cloves optional, for extra depth
  • 1 cup milk whole milk, coconut milk, or evaporated milk
  • 1 –2 tablespoons sugar adjust to taste
  • ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • A pinch of salt
  • A pinch of freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch

Instructions

Start The Base

  • Heat the water in a pot until it just begins to boil. Add the grated cocoa, cinnamon stick, cloves, bay leaf, and the tea bag. Let everything gently simmer for about 5 minutes so the flavors blend nicely.

Make It Creamy

  • Pour in the milk and give it a good stir. In a separate small bowl, mix the cornstarch with a splash of water until smooth, then add it to the pot. Keep stirring so it thickens slightly without forming lumps.

Finish It Off

  • Stir in the sugar, vanilla, a pinch of salt, and nutmeg. Let it simmer for another couple of minutes. Take out the tea bag and whole spices (or strain it if you prefer a smoother drink). Serve while hot.
