Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Wooden spoon or silicone spatula
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Stove or cooktop
  • Storage jar or bottle

Ingredients

  • 240 g ketchup
  • 120 ml apple cider vinegar
  • 70 g packed brown sugar
  • 30 g molasses & 30 g honey
  • 15 ml Worcestershire sauce
  • 8 g smoked paprika
  • 3 g garlic powder & 3 g onion powder
  • 2 g ground black pepper & 2 g chili powder adjust to taste
  • 3 g salt
  • 5 g mustard yellow or Dijon
  • 14 g butter
  • 1 ml liquid smoke
  • 1 ml hot sauce such as Tabasco
  • 30 ml bourbon

Instructions

Mix The Base

  • Grab a medium saucepan and set it over medium heat. Add the ketchup, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, molasses, honey, and butter. Keep stirring until everything melts together into a smooth mixture.

Add The Flavor

  • Now toss in the Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, salt, chili powder, mustard, liquid smoke, and a bit of hot sauce. Stir it all in so the flavors are evenly blended.

Let It Simmer

  • Bring the sauce up to a gentle simmer, then lower the heat. Let it cook for about 10–15 minutes, giving it a stir now and then, until it thickens slightly.

Add The Bourbon

  • Pour in the bourbon and let it simmer for another 2–3 minutes. This cooks off the alcohol but keeps that rich flavor. Take it off the heat and let it cool before storing.
