Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Whisk or wooden spoon
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Ingredients

  • 1 cup no salt added tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon molasses
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon mustard powder
  • ½ teaspoon chili powder
  • ½ cup water
  • 1 teaspoon liquid smoke
  • 2.5 tablespoons sugar
  • 1.5 teaspoons lemon juice
  • 4 tablespoons packed brown sugar
  • 1.5 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

Step 1: Mix The Base

  • In a medium saucepan, combine the tomato sauce, tomato paste, apple cider vinegar, honey (or maple syrup), molasses, and water. Stir everything together until the mixture is smooth and uniform.

Step 2: Add Seasonings

  • Sprinkle in the smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, mustard powder, chili powder (if you like heat), cinnamon, liquid smoke, sugar, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, and a splash of lemon juice. Whisk well so all the flavors blend together.

Step 3: Simmer Until Thick

  • Set the pan over medium heat and bring the sauce to a gentle simmer, stirring occasionally. Lower the heat and let it cook for about 10–15 minutes, or until it reaches the thickness you like.

Step 4: Taste & Store

  • Give the sauce a taste and tweak the sweetness, tanginess, or spice if needed. Take it off the heat and let it cool a bit. Pour it into a jar or bowl. You can use it right away, or keep it in the fridge for later.
